Reader’s Poll No. 2

The recent readers poll looked at which of the options under Resolution 2625 the Falkland Islanders should opt for. The results are as follows:

A different political status determined by the Falkland Islanders      44%

Establishment of a free and Sovereign State                                         25%

Free Association with an independent State                                        20%

Integration with an independent State                                                  11%


General Assembly Resolution 2625 enshrines a number of principles including; ‘The Principle of Equal Rights and the Self-Determination of Peoples‘, and states;

” … By virtue of the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, all peoples have the right freely to determine, without external interference, their political status and to pursue their economic, social and cultural development, and every State has the duty to respect this right in accordance with the provisions of the Charter…. “

The readers of the Falklands News clearly believe that the future status of the Falkland Islands should be determined by the peoples of those Islands. Argentina’s favoured result only achieved 11% of the votes.
