Och aye – the Falklands noo

20 Feb

In a somewhat obscure move, Argentina has indicated that it wishes to drum up support in Scotland, for its aspirations over the Falkland Islands.

Carlos Kunkel, a political ally of Argentina’s President, Cristina Fernandez, said yesterday; “We are analysing the possibility of sending a delegation to the celebrations of the Scottish victory.” The victory being referred to appears to be the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn in 2014 when First Minister, Alex Salmond, hopes to hold a referendum on Scottish independence.

Quite why the Scots would be inclined to support Argentina is unclear, considering that the Falkland Islands are named after a Scot, the 5th Viscount Falkland, and that many of the Islanders’ have a Scottish ancestor. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Alex Salmond is considering making a Scottish claim for the Falklands on the basis that an independent Scotland would have as much right to the South Atlantic archipelago as Argentina.

Real news appears thin on the ground.

An independent Scotland should be given the Falklands just to punish this attempt by the Argentines to divide and rule.
