Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

21 Jan

Argentina’s Interior Minister repeated Argentina’s claim for sovereignty over the Falkland Islands today, based on the fact that they, ” .. dwell over ten thousand kilometers from the United Kingdom,”

The Minister, Florencio Randazzo further pointed out that the claim is a part of Argentina’s policy, being set out in the current Constitution, and confirmed that the Government of Cristina Fernandez would; “keep on insisting that Britain sit down to negotiate.” He went on to claim that Argentina was garnering more support from other countries through its pacific approach.

“We have no doubt. The Malvinas Islands belong to Argentina. There is no reasonable explanation for the British presence on the Islands. It is a usurpation of a territory which doesn’t belong to them.”

Argentina has often claimed that the distance between Great Britain and it’s South Atlantic Territories of the Falklands, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is pertinent to Argentina’s claim, despite geography having been ruled irrelevant in sovereignty cases as long ago as 1928, in the Islas de Palmas case. In a similar vein, Chile claims much of Antarctica on the assumption that the continent is an extension of the Andes.

Britain and Argentina fought a short war over the Falklands and South Georgia in 1982. Argentina lost that war and last week there were calls in the House of Commons for Argentina to be reminded of that fact.
