Falkland Defences Upgrade

16 Nov

The Falkland Islands defences are due for a multimillion dollar facelift after the award of a new contract to Interserve Defence.

The amount to be expended on the Islands was not detailed in the statement, but it accompanied another announcement about  the building of a new runway on St. Helena which will reduce air travel times between these remote British Overseas Territories. The new runway is not planned to be long enough for commercial flights but would certainly be sufficient for military aircraft.

“By providing a single, strategic, U.K.-based management structure and a bundled package of services for all the territories, Interserve will create efficiencies and deliver more for less, ensuring an enhanced service together with significant cost savings,” an Interserve spokesman said.

Argentina, which recently claimed that the civilian population of the Falklands were being held hostage by British forces, is expected to protest any new work.
