Jorge Argüello Threatens Veterans Flights

22 Sep

Argentina’s permanent representative to the United Nations confirmed yesterday President Cristine Fernandez’s threat to stop the once a week flight between the Falkland Islands and Argentina.

Speaking in New York, Jorge Argüello, spoke to reporters; “Why should Argentina keep facilitating British citizens to travel between the islands and mainland Argentina, while the UK refuses to negotiate sovereignty over the archipelago and keeps on appropriating natural resources from it …  it’s totally logical if Argentina finally decides to reconsider all agreements signed with the UK.”

The air connection between Punta Arenas in Chile and Mount Pleasant Airport in the Falklands, currently stops off at Río Gallegos, Argentina en-route and it appears to be this stop-over that is under threat.

These arrangements came about following the agreements in 1989 which restored diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and Argentina and facilitated the visit to the Islands by veterans of the Falklands War.

Any curtailment of the flights would seriously affect those travelling from Argentina to next year’s 30th anniversary events on the Falklands, particularly the relatives of the Argentine dead. Other flights between the UK and Stanley via Ascension Island operate on a regular basis.
